A Small Bedside Cot That Attaches to Your Adult Bed

A bedside crib allows you to keep your baby close during the night, without having to get up. The fabric is breathable, which lets you easily see your baby, and they're incredibly easy to lower for those sleepy 3am feeds.

Some also double up as a moses basket as well.

What is a bedside cot?

A bedside crib, also known as a bassinet, or co-sleeper is a baby cot attached to your adult bed. This allows your newborn to sleep next to you in safety. This is a safe form of co-sleeping, which doesn't increase the risk of SIDS as bedsharing does. It can also help you bond with your newborn baby.

The cots usually come with a side that can be adjusted so that you can easily reach your newborn throughout the night for feeding and comforting. This is particularly helpful for mums recovering from an op. Many are portable or foldable which means you can use them for trips and as an interim solution for infants who aren't ready to move to a larger crib.

Choose a crib that has a breathable mattress, and an appropriate cover to shield your baby from staining. It is also advisable to purchase baby-safe accessories such as a blanket, a teether and cuddly toys.

If you're looking for a longer-term option, some cribs have conversion kits that allow you to transform them into a cot or toddler bed at the time of need. This will prolong their life and make the transition smoother. Some even have a detachable top section that converts into a bassinet, while others can be used on either the regular or high-rise adult bed. This is an excellent choice for families that plan to frequently travel or switch between bedrooms in the evening. Be aware of the dimensions of your room to make sure you can be able to fit in the crib comfortably. A lot of cribs have an riser that can be used to create an inclined position for babies who suffer from reflux.

The crib can be locked into its place after the rocking has been done to stop it moving. It can be secured to the side of your bed by clips and straps. This makes it extremely solid and secure, allowing you to get a good night's sleep without worrying about your little one sliding off into the middle of the room. Anna discovered the CoZee to be a safe, comfortable sleeping space for her infant. She was pleased that it didn't move like other models, which meant she didn't wake up in the night trying to soothe her child during feedings. She also loved that the side of the chair could be lowered so she didn't need to reach over her partner in order to lift the child for nighttime feedings.

The CoZee comes in oak or charcoal and is a fashionable option for any bedroom. It looks more like an expensive piece of furniture than many of the other cribs we've tested, which can look quite utilitarian in comparison. It's also relatively lightweight at just 11kg and comes with a carry case which allows you to take it on vacation or if you're moving house. The only additional items you'll need to buy are a waterproof cover and a safety strap for co-sleeping. There are helpful step-by-step instructions and illustrations to guide you through the process as you open the box, making it a single-person job should you need to.

The Maxi-Cosi Lora

The Iora is a bassinet that can be placed at the bedside that allows parents to feel more connected to their infant while they sleep. It adjusts upwards and downwards and slides through three positions to fit next to the bed of the parent or in the corner of the room so that baby is always close to the parent's side. The mesh siding allows air to flow through and allows you to see your baby quickly. And you can store additional pajamas and other items in the large storage basket beneath.

The Iora is a smaller bedside cot that can fold flat. It also comes with a travel case to allow it to be carried anywhere. Our mum testers were able to move it from room to room, and believed it was a great size for a bedside cot that was not too big or too small. They also appreciated the large storage basket which is ideal for stowing nappies or bedding.

This is a great choice for parents who wish to sleep in a co-sleeping bed but don't want to share their bed. Or if one of the partners suffers from mobility issues such as back pain or arthritis. Our mom testers love the ease with which they can access their baby in the Iora, and it also has an optional reflux incline to aid in reducing gas.

Our mums appreciate the fact that it meets NICE guidelines which state that you should place the infant in a crib or Moses basket on its own (with no toys, blankets pillows, etc.). They also claim that the mattress is comfortable and firm for baby and is easy to find sheets for. It's not as light as the other cribs that are smaller on our list, so if you prefer something lighter and easier to move, you can choose another alternative.
